Netanyahu’s ‘anarchist handbook’: Why is Israel’s prime minister constantly denouncing protesters as ‘anarchists’? How has the protest movement responded? And how does any of this relate to Israel’s own, authentic anarchist tradition?

“Good evening, anarchists!” With these words, a speaker greeted the huge crowd at last Saturday’s protest in Tel Aviv against the government’s plans to overhaul the judiciary.
The woman at the podium, Limor Livnat – a former high-ranking Likud politician who, like so many others, had fallen out with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – was obviously not being serious.
But the hundreds of thousands of protesters taking to the streets over the past 10 weeks have been denounced so many times as “anarchists” by Netanyahu that they have starting to regard the term almost as a badge of honor.
