Montreal’s John A. Macdonald and Queen Victoria statues were once again doused with paint on Friday.
The Montreal May Anarchists took responsibility for re-vandalizing the two statues ahead of the Victoria Day weekend, which have been repeatedly targeted in the past.
The John A. Macdonald statue in Place du Canada was painted green, which the group said was for “anti-colonial” reasons. McGill’s Queen Victoria statue was painted red because of the colour’s “anti-imperial” connotations.
Both statues were last doused with paint in March.
Citing the Brigade de solidarité anticoloniale Delhi-Dublin, the anarchist group said the Queen Victoria statue was an “insult to the struggles for self-determination and resistance of oppressed peoples worldwide.”
