The Wall Street attack — which was, in effect, a prototype for thousands of car bombs to come around the world — remains officially unsolved. The hooves of the horse that drew the fatal wagon were blown off, and its shoes unsuccessfully examined for evidence. The perpetrator’s body was not among the dead, as he had successfully fled the scene before the bomb detonated. Many historians, however, believe the blast was the work of Italian anarchist Mario Buda, a follower of a revolutionary named Luigi Galleani and an associate of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, Italian immigrant laborers who had been indicted in the April murder of two bank employees during an armed robbery in Massachusetts.
